Habits Are Only Valuable If They Last

Building habits is a journey, one that begins with enthusiasm but often faces hurdles along the way. As Christians, we are called to be intentional about our habits, especially when they align with spiritual growth and honoring God. However, consistency often proves to be the hardest part. Let’s explore how to make habits a steadfast part of our daily lives and how our environment shapes this process.

The Excitement of Starting vs. the Challenge of Continuing

Starting a new habit is easy because it’s exciting, fresh, and often comes with a sense of validation. For instance, the surge in gym memberships every January. People are inspired to get fit- motivated by New Year’s resolutions- but by February, the treadmills start to gather dust as motivation wanes. Similarly, many Christians begin yearly Bible-reading plans with great enthusiasm, only to abandon them a few months later because their routines don't support the habit.

Why does this happen? The issue lies in the gap between motivation and consistency. Motivation is fleeting, but consistency requires discipline, structure, and perseverance. Without a plan to sustain the habit during mundane or challenging times, the initial excitement fades, leaving the habit to wither.

The Power of Environment in Sustaining Habits

We’ve all heard the phrase, “You’re a product of your environment,” but what does that truly mean? Your environment is not just the physical space you occupy, it’s also the people you surround yourself with, the values they hold, and the subtle influences of your surroundings.

For example, if you’re trying to build a healthier marriage, spending time with friends who don’t value or prioritize marriage can be detrimental. Their attitudes and advice, even if unintentional, may steer you away from your goals. Conversely, surrounding yourself with couples who encourage and uplift your marriage can inspire you to grow closer to your spouse. Always get advice and guidance from someone who has the goal you are in the process of achieving.

Similarly, if you want to stay consistent with a Bible-reading habit, consider the spaces and tools you have around you. Is your Bible easily accessible? Do you have a designated time and place for study? Small adjustments to your environment can make a significant difference.

Practical Steps for Making Habits Consistent

  1. Start Small and Stay Realistic: Begin with manageable goals that fit into your existing routine. For example, if reading the Bible for 30 minutes daily feels overwhelming, start with 5 minutes and gradually increase.

  2. Create a Supportive Environment: Remove obstacles that make habits harder to sustain. If you're trying to exercise, lay out your workout clothes the night before. For Bible study, create a peaceful space with minimal distractions.

  3. Surround Yourself with Encouragement: Choose to spend time with people who share your goals and values. Join a Bible study group or find an accountability partner who will keep you motivated.

  4. Focus on Discipline, Not Motivation: Motivation will ebb and flow, but discipline is what keeps you going. Commit to showing up, even when you don’t feel like it.

  5. Pray for Guidance: Ask God for the strength to remain steadfast. Philippians 4:13 reminds us, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

Building consistent habits requires intentionality, discipline, and an environment that supports growth. Whether it’s strengthening your relationship with God, improving your marriage, or fostering physical wellness, the path to consistency isn’t easy, but it’s worth it. Remember, as Galatians 6:9 encourages us, “Let us not grow weary of doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
